Castle Group Scotland
is a civil and structural engineering business that specialises in delivering complex projects over water in sensitive environments.
The Contracts Director was struggling to recover costs from (unexpected water levels causing significant project delays) significant project delays because of unexpected water levels in September 2016. The team didn’t not have the expertise to evidence that water levels are unusual based on historic data, and related to the change in weather patterns.
Drawing on our environmental knowledge and applying an assurance approach, we analysed SEPA water levels at three reference points, and rainfall patterns over a 10 year period. Our analysis showed that the river levels for September 2016 were 40% above average, and correlated to a 267% increase in rainfall.
Our impartial assessment supported the company’s successful claim ensuring planned margins were achieved. Recovered costs equalled 50% of project value, approved by commercial auditor at a Scottish Government Body . Our approach is now built into project risk assessment for similar high risk projects in order to minimise future losses. This case study is a tangible example of our climate change impacts are real risk, and unpredicted and unusual weather events can have a financial and operational costs to SMEs.
This is a tangible example of how climate change effects present real risk, and how unpredicted and unusual weather events can have a financial and operational cost to business. Our approach is now built into Castle Group’s project risk assessment for similar high risk projects in order to minimise future losses.
