Webinar – “Embarking On Your Net Zero Strategy”

We ran a webinar for Midlothian and East Lothian Chamber of Commerce on embarking on your Net Zero Strategy. Our goal for this webinar was to help make the journey to Net Zero feel achievable rather than overwhelming. From our survey results (see below) and the feedback we received, we’ve been successful! 

We’ll be taking this format forward to help our clients and our wider networks engage with their supply chain via free taster sessions designed to help businesses feel more confident that they’re up to the challenge of planning for Net Zero. If you think you (or someone in your network) would benefit from this, please feel free to reach out!

COP30 – Where do we go from here…?

The COP30 in Brazil last month was framed as Ambition and Action,  instead it was Power and Politics, and against the background of growing global disunity and breakdown of consensus around climate change and the actions required.

30 years ago, the COP process was a response to the Environmental Emergency, which evolved into the Humanitarian Emergency, as an overstretched planet will diminish the livelihoods of 99% of citizens, especially those most vulnerable.

Now, with the latest global warming trending towards 1.5°C and recent impacts of extreme heat, flooding, and drought are affecting the economic systems that support our daily lives;  where do businesses go from here?

“From LGBTQ+ Confusion to Inclusion”

As part of our accessibility and inclusion programme, we’re always looking to expand our understanding of how we can make the workplace a more inclusive and supportive space for everyone. This year, we’ve completed an online training course by Proud Futures focused on increasing our knowledge and awareness of the LGBTQ+ community. 

We’ve got a blog post in the works on some of the points we’ve found most striking as a team and some of our reflections on the experience, but in the meantime, we want to flag this course up to you! It’s an excellent course informed by lived experience that can be completed at your own pace and puts a strong emphasis on creating a supportive space to learn and reflect.

B Corp Recertification 

We’ve gone through our recertification process in May this year, and are proud to share that our impact score has increased from 101.7 in 2021 to 125.9 in 2024. The score shows almost a 25% improvement from 2021, which is a testament to the hard work of our team during that period.Find our profile on the B Corp website for more details.

Centre Circle Event Management Ltd Case Study: ESOS

Centre Circle Event Management Ltd is a company that provides security staff for some of the UK’s most iconic venues and events, such as football stadiums and music venues. We’ve supported them through their first experience of ESOS compliance. You can read the case study on our website here.

Pentland Science Park Case Study: Environmental Management System internal audit

Pentland Science Park Ltd was established by The Moredun Foundation to improve the welfare of livestock for the Scottish farming community. The science park is home to leading scientific and research organisations, including Moredun Research Institute. Pentland Science Park Ltd (PSP hereafter) manages the park’s estate, facilities and two farms to ensure its environmental management complies with ISO14001 requirements. 

In late 2024, our friends at On-site Generation introduced us to PSP to respond to the Compliance Manager’s request for assistance with internal auditing of the Environmental Management System of this large and complex estate with multiple tenants.

Rebecca moving on

Rebecca is moving on after a year and a half with Beyond Green. During her tenure with us, she worked diligently on our ESOS projects in 2024, ensuring that all complex reporting requirements were met, including creating a comprehensive spreadsheet to process the data needed for the board reports.

She also embraced working on Business Energy Scotland projects to help smaller organisations save money and carbon from reducing energy consumption. Rebecca brought her creative skills to the Beyond Green table, through her involvement with our presentations and interview-style videos to share with our clients. The team will miss her positivity and liveliness, and wish her all the best in her new role.

This newsletter, we’re sharing a case study on our work with Vegware on the Green Claims Code, and talk about B Corp Month, International Women’s Day, and how we can make a difference as a business for disabled and trans employees and communities.

Vegware Case Study – Green Claims Code

Founded in 2006, Vegware is an Edinburgh-based food packaging company like no other. They specialise in certified compostable ”Packaging made from plants”. With their pre-sales advice and market education, followed by their after-sales support with the Close the Loop service, their passion is to maximise food packaging becoming compost.

We have been supporting them with their certification to ISO14001 and ISO9001 for Environment and Quality Management since 2013 – in 2024, we expanded the depth and breadth of our internal compliance audit of Vegware’s market and customer communication to evaluate compliance against the 13 aspects of the Green Claims Code (GCC). B Corp Month

Last month was B Corp Month. This year’s theme was #GenB or Generation B – being part of a generation of businesses aiming to have a positive impact on the world.

The theme of generations of changemakers is a very relevant topic in sustainability conversations, so for this year, we decided to focus on different aspects of the role different generations play in driving change in business and in sustainability. Here are some of our thoughts on the topic:

• “When we forget that our present grew out of the seeds sown by people coming before us, we forget that it is never just on one generation to create change.” (What came before – LinkedIn)

International Women’s Day 2025

The theme for International Women’s Day this year was #AccelerateAction. Inspired by the theme for B Corp Month this year, we reflected on how different generations can work together in accelerating action for women’s rights, within our shared space of sustainability work.

We’ve reached out to women in our professional networks to get some of their thoughts on what they’ve gained from working with different generations of people, and on what they’d like to see for the future. Read our blog post for International Women’s Day 2025 here.

Making A Difference

After all this talk about being a business for a good, we feel it is only appropriate to share a couple of the areas where we see an urgent need for action.

Disability Benefits Cuts

As a B Corp as well as a Disability Confident Leader, the news of the planned benefit cuts for ill and disabled people and the huge impact the cuts would have on the most vulnerable populations is difficult to see. The wider conversation is often skewed towards individual responsibility, without accounting for the systemic barriers to work for disabled employees or the role of organisations in addressing them. We’ve shared some of our thoughts on the responsibility of businesses to support our disabled employees on LinkedIn.

It is also on us as businesses to speak up, and to support our employees in doing so if they would like to. Disability Rights UK has pulled together resources on how to take action against the proposed disability benefits cuts.

Support for Trans Women

With the recent UK Supreme Court ruling on ‘woman’ as an identity being based on biological sex, it is now more important than ever to think about how we can support our trans employees, co-workers, and connections in our community.

The ruling and the uncertainties around what comes next will have a significant impact on a lot of people’s lives and mental wellbeing. Staying informed and checking in on your trans contacts can make a world of a difference during a time when they may be made to feel unwelcome and isolated.

In addition, a good first step to making a difference is to share resources, appropriate training materials and opinions from people directly impacted, so these are some of the resources we’ve found helpful:

• Disability Rights UK’s blog posts on the connections between disabled and trans experiences
• Biological Science Rejects the Sex Binary (Article) – “The data-driven bottom line is that “man/woman” and “masculine/feminine” are neither biological terms nor rooted exclusively in biology.” 

At Beyond Green, we’ve been focused on accessibility and general inclusion in our social sustainability work over the last few years, but the current situation has highlighted to us that trans rights should be its own theme within our advocacy for responsible business practices.

Energy Saving Tips for Winter

As we’re heading into the coldest parts of the year, heating costs will drive up business costs. Business Energy Scotland’s handy guide on staying warm for less is a good starting point for considering ways to reduce your heating costs as a business. 

Craig Moving On

Craig is moving on after a year with Beyond Green. During his time with us, he has worked on 11 Business Energy Scotland projects with an identified cost saving of £19,600 and potential carbon reduction of 81tCO2e.

Craig has been instrumental in us expanding our processes for supporting trainees joining our team, ensuring that our new team members feel supported while settling into their new roles.

COP29 – Sustainability and the weather shaping our lives

Every year for COP, we like to take the opportunity to take a step back and reflect on climate change both locally and globally. For too long, most of the Western world has seen climate change as a problem only impacting distant islands and peoples. We are now faced with two competing challenges: adapting to the risks (more risks than opportunities) of climate change, and mitigating further impacts by reducing emissions from fossil fuels and land-use changes.

The Royal College of Pathologists – Case Study

Among a multitude of risks posed by a changing climate, it has been predicted that rising global temperatures could lead to an increased risk of future pandemics.The Royal College of Pathologists are aware of the severity of the climate emergency and want to play their part in a low-carbon future.

Team Changes

Welcome to the team, Luke!

Luke joins us as a Trainee Sustainability Advisor for the next year. After his tenure in the software industry, he took a brief career break to reassess his priorities and then decided to pursue a career that aligns with his passion for sustainability. With a background in Software Client Success and Property Development Project Administration, Luke brings valuable transferable skills to our team.

He has already demonstrated these skills by contributing to Business Energy Scotland projects, where he builds rapport with clients and supports successful project delivery through precise calculations and assistance to senior advisors. Luke was drawn to Beyond Green because of its value-driven ethos and is excited to deepen his knowledge of the industry and making a meaningful impact. Welcome to the team, Luke!

Sally is moving on

We’re saying good-bye to Sally, who has been with us as a Business Support Assistant and then Business Development Specialist for almost 2 years. During her time with us, she’s been supporting our sustainability advisors in keeping projects on track through excellent administration support, led on our document management improvements which transformed our process and helped build our accessibility mindset into our business development processes.

Sally always found time to help others, especially new team members while they settled into the team. Sally is now moving on to focus on her family for a while. We wish her all the best for the future!

News: Green Arts Charter & Green Theatre Book

Creative Carbon Scotland’s Green Arts Charter is celebrating 6 months as well as the launch of the second edition of the Green Theatre book – both excellent starting points for putting sustainability goals into practice.

The Green Arts Charter is a framework for cultural organisations in the Green Arts Initiative (GAI) to deliver on their carbon ambitions; you can read more on what the Green Arts Charter entails here.

The Green Theatre book is a framework that uses the themes of Productions, Operations and Buildings to support theatres in moving towards a more sustainable future. Welcoming Rebecca and Evelin to the team

Our small team has grown with two new trainee sustainability advisors joining us this year! 

Welcome Rebecca

Rebecca has an extensive background in legal research and a comprehensive understanding of both national and international legal frameworks relating to the energy sector. She brings specialist knowledge of legislation, policy, regulations, and procedures to Beyond Green and has a passion for issues of environmental ethics, sustainability, and energy security. Her professional background has given her experience in project management, client communication, teaching, quality assurance, marketing, and networking.

With a background in teaching, training, and creating online art courses, Rebecca possesses transferable skills applicable to delivering sustainability workshops and advising on energy efficiency measures. Her experience includes delivering live lessons, grading, and providing feedback, supported by a TESOL certification. Rebecca joined Beyond Green in December ‘23 and is already assisting in the production and delivery of Net Zero projects, ESOS compliance reports, and has been working with various SMEs, providing advice and recommendations on energy efficiency measures.

Welcome Evelin

Evelin brings extensive experience in accounting analysis. She has leveraged her numerical skills in Beyond Green and is quickly catching up on activities like calculating efficiency measures. Evelin also brings more recent studies around SDGs and SBTi to achieve Net Zero. She has a keen interest in incorporating her skills and learning how to support businesses to reduce their carbon emissions by making more sustainable decisions.

She joined Beyond Green in January 2024 and has been assisting with calculations from energy consumption to reduction of energy loss with different measures. She has also supported the creation and delivery of Net Zero projects with clients, and is currently contributing on evaluation and improvement of data gathering processes for carbon reporting.

International Women’s Day 2024

In celebrating International Women’s Day, we’ve taken the time to acknowledge and reaffirm our commitment to building a world where women have equal opportunities to thrive. We have tackled many interesting and difficult conversations about the everyday challenges faced by women, and the social norms which enable these issues to persist. Our conversations have highlighted the importance of maintaining a space to discuss these barriers, to learn from one another, and raise awareness of the intersectionality within women’s experiences, so we can become better allies and recognise the assumptions we make about what we are capable of.

We’re a Disability Confident Leader!

We’re delighted to announce that we’re now a Disability Confident Leader (Level 3 of the scheme)! This means we’ve worked together with an external partner, in our case Disability Rights UK, to validate the work we’ve done on becoming a more accessible employer. We’re proud of our progress so far and are hoping to continue learning and improving.

We realise it can be quite daunting to start on a journey like this, so if you are an employer and you’re curious about the Disability Confident process yourself, please do get in touch – we’re happy to have a brief chat about our experience as a microbusiness going through the process!

J. Smart & Co. (Contractors) PLC Case Study

J. Smart & Co. (Contractors) PLC  is a leading property developer and construction company in Scotland’s Central Belt with a blended portfolio of industrial properties and office spaces. Although J Smart is a UK-listed company, it is a family-run business with an ambitious team that realises the importance and value of transitioning to improving their Net Zero and sustainable business practices.  

J Smart with the support of Beyond Green are now planning the 2024 Financial Disclosures (TCFD) (which will be incorporated under the UK Sustainability Disclosure Standards (SDS) going forward) and GHG Emissions reporting progress. 2024 will also see J Smart develop its first Net Zero Roadmap to evidence how it will achieve Science Based Targets for 2030.We’ve recently supported them with their Taskforce for Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) listing requirements and the creation of their first sustainability strategy.

An Approach to Sustainability

Our founder and director Paul Adderley has developed an approach for thinking about sustainability, built on his expertise and reflections from 30 years of studying and working in the field, as well as leading a values-driven business. Climate Change despondency around COP28

Over recent months leading up to COP28, there has been regular news leading to greater climate anxiety amongst the general population, environmentalists, business leaders and activists – the full spectrum of stakeholders.

And we’re not off to the best start in the latest edition of COP,  with the UAE’s Sultan Al Jaber – the president of the conference, who also holds a position as Chief Executive of the state’s oil company, Adnoc – refuting the scientific consensus around the need to phase out fossil fuels in order to limit warming to >2°C. As COP28 sounds like a broken record as climate records are being broken, we at Beyond Green have taken inspiration from Joanna Macy’s work on Active Hope for our latest blog post.

Rejecting Fast Fashion Aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals

As part of our drive to be a business for good, we believe it’s our job to start difficult conversations. So, prompted by Global Goals Week, we wanted to discuss the clothing industry, and how fast fashion relates to the Sustainable Development Goals. 

The clothing industry is estimated to account for around 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, which is five times more than aviation. Read more about the fast fashion business model and its implications on our blog here.

Net Zero Strategy Survey

We are currently running a survey to better understand how we can help organisations move towards Net Zero. You don’t need to have started the process or have an in-depth understanding of Net Zero to fill in the survey; we’re using the responses to gauge where we can tailor our work to remove barriers to progress. We appreciate your help!

Aberdeen Performing Arts Case Study

We believe that part of the value we add through our work is to accompany our clients and partners throughout their sustainability journey, however we can support them. Today’s case study is covering our work with Aberdeen Performing Arts, who has recently been shortlisted under the Climate Action category within the North of Scotland Thistle Awards, a reflection of their dedication to sustainability and their hard work over the years.

George Leslie receives positive feedback on their Carbon Management Plan

Sometimes it can take a while for the impact of our work to flow back to us. In 2022, we supported George Leslie, one of Scotland’s major construction companies, with the preparation of their Carbon Management Plan, a key requirement for the Scottish Water Framework. 

So we were delighted to hear over the summer that their carbon management plan received excellent feedback; it was strong in setting the scene, balancing long term and interim targets, clearly defining boundaries and connecting reduction projects to targets. Overall, Scottish Water noted that the plan provided great detail, and was structured really well!  

George Leslie were undoubtedly very pleased with the feedback, too. Our collaborative partnership with them continues to grow as we’re supporting them with their ESOS compliance which goes hand in hand with their carbon management plan.

Introduction to Carbon Accounting

We’ve recently published an introduction to carbon accounting to our blog. Carbon Accounting is the process of calculating the direct and indirect carbon emissions generated by an organisation’s operations within a defined boundary, also referred to as your carbon footprint. It is an important tool in the journey towards Net Zero carbon emissions. Read our introduction to Carbon Accounting on our website here.

Welcoming Craig to the team

Craig is joining us as our new Trainee Sustainability Advisor. His previous customer service experience and his time working on the Home Energy Scotland programme will bring valuable project experience in client management and energy efficiency to Beyond Green. 

Craig brings a dual education in climate change and business. He recently graduated with distinction from The University of Edinburgh’s postgraduate programme in Carbon Management. Previously, he had attained an upper second-class honours degree in Business Management from the same institution. 

“I am really looking forward to kick starting my career in sustainability within Beyond Green. In just the first week of my induction, I was able to sample a live project and was immediately struck by the collaborative nature of our work. It will be great to work with clients not only to advise them of ways that they can reduce their environmental impact, but also to help foster a culture of inclusivity in decision making along the way.”

Neil Moving On

Neil is moving on after nearly two years with Beyond Green. During his time with us, he has delivered 10 projects for Business Energy Scotland, has led a number of high profile Net Zero Projects, such as Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland, the Royal College of Radiologists, and Inspiring Scotland; and managed our retainer for Anderson Strathern.  With his approachable manner, attention to detail and excellent client service, he has helped these clients and others move forward in their Net Zero journey. 

He has also been instrumental in formalizing our IT processes, streamlining project delivery and has supported our accessibility programme work and our digital transformation. We wish him all the best in his new role!

Mindful Employer

We’re always looking for the best way to support our team. Becoming a Mindful Employer reflects many of our existing positive practices and also provides valuable resources for us to move forward.

We have shared our thoughts on climate anxiety before, a topic that will become ever more important as we see the impacts of the climate crisis on the world. But the way we work – remote work and ambitious plans – can also put a pressure on our team to manage alone or set very high expectations for themselves.  

We believe it is crucial to look after our mental wellbeing, especially as a business for good, because you can only do your best work and make a difference if you are supported in your work.

4 Day Working Week Pilot

A new year, a new challenge – this year, we’re taking another step forward to supporting our team’s work/life balance and wellbeing by piloting a 4 Day Working Week model. 

We’re building on our digital transformation and our accessibility work to make delivering high quality work and added value to our clients possible even with reduced hours. We are taking an evidence based approach to ensure we can reliably measure the impacts on our business. By regularly checking in as a team to share tips and tricks for a 4DW, we can identify necessary changes to the way we work so we can continually improve and make 4DW a reality! The results of the UK 4 day working week pilot programme were announced and its overall success is inspiring.

We’re not expecting any impact on our projects or our clients. Our official working hours from now on will be Monday to Thursday, 9 am to 5:30 pm, though as our team has flexible working options, you may get responses outside of these hours.

ICAS Case Study and Retainer

This time, we’re sharing a case study on ICAS, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland. They have been reporting their annual carbon emissions through the Carbon Disclosure Project since 2011 and recently wanted to expand their climate leadership and develop a Net Zero strategy.

We’re hiring!

We’re looking for a senior sustainability advisor to join our team. 

The ideal candidate will have previous experience in advising businesses to make informed decisions using their technical expertise. As part of the core delivery team, you will need to calculate carbon emissions for all categories, lead group discussions to identify carbon reduction options, model Net Zero pathways to 2050, including data analysis for scenario planning, and conduct initial energy efficiency and renewable energy assessments.Find all the details of our vacancy and apply on LinkedIn here.

We were finalists in the Transformational Change Category in the Centre for Engineering, Education and Development (CeeD) awards. The pandemic and our subsequent shift to permanently remote work have been a challenge for us as a microbusiness, and we’re proud of the way we’ve adapted as a business and come out stronger for the future. 

Celebrating Small Business Awards Finalist

We were finalists for Federation of Small Business (FSB)’s sustainability award in Scotland!  It’s great to see our impact and our partnership approach to working with SMEs recognized. 

Recognising Women in Sustainability

Early this month was International Women’s Day. As a sustainability focused business, we’re very aware of the barriers to inclusion for women who are passionate about sustainability and want to be leaders of the change needed for a Just Transition. Read more about what Beyond Green is doing to improve parity of women.

New Client: Chartered Society of Physiotherapy Scotland

We are excited to be working with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy to support them with their strategic objective to develop their Net Zero Strategy and carbon reduction roadmap. This builds on our work with similar medical professional bodies like The Royal College of Radiologists and the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons.
