What is resource efficiency?
The term ‘resource efficiency’ refers to using resources like materials, water, electricity, gas, oil (etc.) more efficiently, that is, in a way that uses less to get the same or a better result. As an example, this could be as simple as replacing light bulbs – if you are still using incandescent light bulbs, replacing them with newer types will mean extending the lifetime of your bulbs significantly while also using less energy to provide the same amount of light.
Why does resource efficiency matter?
Resource efficiency can help you reduce your environmental and carbon impact, reduce your costs and dependence on limited resources, and give you a way to build your values into your brand.
In terms of reducing costs, using resources more efficiently will allow you to achieve similar or better results with fewer costs. You likely can’t avoid some basics like lighting, heating/cooling, storage, and fuel for transport, regardless of your business type. Some of your essential business functions may in fact be dependent on significant resource use. There isn’t always a perfectly sustainable alternative, but considering your options carefully can help you reduce your overheads and improve your cash flow.
More than that, a lot of resources are limited – the more dependent your business is on non-renewable resources, the more your essential business functions are at risk of being affected by shortages or price hikes. Building resource efficiency into your business strategy means taking more control over where you are sourcing resources and how you use them, and schedule improvements, rather than being forced into it by circumstances. Resource efficiency can help you future-proof your company.
