VIBES 2022 – We’re a finalist!

We’re delighted to announce that we are a finalist in this year’s VIBES awards in the Environmental Services and Product Category, in recognition of the impact we have and how we deliver our work for a Just Transition. It’s always an honour to make it to this stage. We wish all finalists all the best with their judging day!

We’ve previously won a Good Practice Award (2021) and been the winner of the Sustainable and Active Travel category for 2018.

Firstport – Enthusiasm, Creativity and Vision to Net Zero

Firstport is one of Scotland’s leading organisations dedicated to helping social entrepreneurs get their ideas off the ground and deliver social good with financial resilience. Their work is closely aligned with our values, and so we were excited to work with them to develop their Net Zero strategy, with the support from our friends at The Surefoot Effect.

For 6 months we have worked closely with their enthusiastic team to understand their carbon impact and, inspired by their creativity and vision, to develop a credible roadmap to reaching Net Zero by 2045.  It’s very encouraging to see how lessons learned during this process will be embedded into the already fantastic support Firstport provides to a huge number of social enterprises across Scotland.

Josiah Lockhart, CEO of Firstport, had the following to say about our support:

“As part of Firstport’s ongoing journey to understand both our own impacts on the environment and those of our clients, we worked with Beyond Green to help measure our carbon footprint, produce a net zero strategy and train our team to better understand our own impact and how to support our clients.

We can’t be happier with Beyond Green’s support which sought to do a deep dive and help us gain a long term perspective not only on understanding where we had come from but also on the impact COVID and our growth plans had on our future CO2e emissions. Our staff team and board are very happy with the support we received and we feel more equipped to tackle the climate emergency through our work. If you are looking for support to go through this process yourself and want to work with a team who can bring a holistic, science-based perspective, we would highly recommend Beyond Green.”

Environmental and Net Zero Policy

In the last few months, we looked afresh at our Environmental policies, which were quite dry and compliance focused, to think about what it is we are really aiming to achieve.  Key areas were to build in our Net Zero strategy, and to make the policy statements engaging to a wider audience. Livi, our Sustainability Trainee, unleashed her creative skills to prepare an infographic of our policy (see preview below), and created a number of internal and external guides for our sustainability practices for procurement, travel and disposal of old items.

A French Connection

Meeting Ageas Patrimoine with our partners Locogen, Anderson Strathern and EGG Lighting

In May, we were delighted to welcome a visiting group of investment and finance professionals from French company Ageas Patrimoine. We conducted a collaborative briefing for their delegates to outline the progress that Scotland is making on climate change and sustainability, and to share experience and knowledge.

They heard excellent presentations from Anderson Strathern, Locogen and EGG Lighting covering topics from renewable energy, sustainability policy and Net Zero strategy as well as circular economy and resource efficiency.

Many thanks to Anderson Strathern for hosting the event at their Glasgow offices.

Team Changes

Olivia Harvey

Livi was our intern for a couple of months, and we were so impressed with her impact she became a Sustainability Trainee within a few weeks. During her time with us, she supported us on project work by applying her creative skills to develop visuals for a Net Zero training module. She also applied a methodological mindset to calculate carbon emissions for a construction client, reworked some of our graphics (including our Net Zero policy linked above!) and generally was an asset to our team. We wish her all the best in her future studies; and hope she is enjoying her time interrailing around Europe.

Billy Hulbert

Billy has moved on to focus on other priorities; as our former Digital Support Assistant under the Kickstart scheme, he supported us with our digital transformation ambitions, including researching digital tools like Zapier and Google Data Studio which we have implemented in the meantime. His work formed a strong foundation for us to build on, and helped us understand ways to streamline data wrangling for raw data we use for carbon calculations. We wish him well for the future.
